CHAPTER NINE

The darkness was almost absolute; the skies were clouded over and no star or moon helped guide them down the valley to where Vardaric and his group were resting. Thanks to the little Bosnian and his men, the seven mercenaries got there without too many mishaps and in good time.

They took a well-used path, walking in single file, and with the first and last man wearing a faintly glowing battery operated light which was not visible beyond thirty feet or so. All remained on the path, walking quietly, immersed in their own thoughts. They did not know how many enemies they would have to face but anyone they came across was to be regarded as just that and so taken out.

The enemy camp was set below a hill that marked the head of two valleys and the mercenaries were shown the top. All laid out alongside one another, looking down on the camp below them. Three trucks and a beaten up automobile formed a rough square with a large fire in the center. Around this the Serbs and Vardaric’s men either slept or rested. Three guards patrolled some distance from this, looking bored. They looked like militiamen.

The field glasses were next to useless and there was no infra-red equipment to hand which irritated Lonjic. No matter, they would cope. The route down was reasonably clear; down a path to one side of the hill that wound round the slopes, and ended at the bottom where a small road stood. The road was of packed earth and this was where the vehicles had come. There was a small watercourse running south-west to north-east and the camp was set on one side of this.

Lonjic made signals to his men. Two were to stay at the top of the hill covering the camp. If anything went wrong, they were to cause mayhem and chaos, then bug out once they had done their stuff. Toloba and de Klerk were assigned to this job. Baja was to lead them to the camp, Linderroth next, Lonjic, Godan and Mendez following in that order.

Once the hit had been made they were all to retreat north-west up the second valley. Lonjic nodded and Baja led the four others off the hill. Begizebic shook hands with them all, wishing them luck, before turning off into the night with his two men. They did not wish to be anywhere near when the shit began.

The slope was steep but the path reasonably unhindered by hazards. They went down to the road and then sneaked along the side towards the silhouetted truck nearest them. Their escape route would be behind them. Lonjic looked left and right. One of the guards was around here. Baja tensed. He had seen the man. Silently, his knife now in his oversized paw, the Nigerian moved off like a wraith, with an agility that belied his size.

There came a slight sound of a struggle then nothing. Two clicks of the finger from Baja signaled he’d disposed of the man.
